The first time I set foot inside Hagia Sophia, its enormity and the centuries of history that congregated within it took my breath away. The natural light passing through the stained glass windows created a beautiful glow to your surroundings.
2.Topkapi Palace

Plan on Spending half-a-day to look around the palace completely. A separate ticket for the Harem section (absolutely worth it). Do NOT forget your water bottle and sensible shoes for all of that walking.

3.The Grand Bazaar

One of the oldest and largest covered markets on Earth, Grand Bazaar has been open since 15th century. It houses over 4,000 shops across some 61 streets to satiate every shopper's need; be it a simple trinket or precious metal, luxurious textile or expensive spices.
Visitor Tips
Prices are open to haggling, so chat the prices down as much possible. The place is manic, so look after your stuff and be ready for the bazaar to set all five senses tingling.
Personal Experience
Walking down the palace alleys of the Grand Bazaar are like wandering into a maze. The smell of spices and the colorful boost in colors from textiles, ceramics that will be an experience to remember. It was a handmade lamp that now sits in our living room, and we are so pleased with it.
4.Blue Mosque
Historical Background
The Blue Mosque - also known as the Sultan Ahmed mosque - which was completed in 1616 is renowned for its interior walls being covered with breath-taking blue tiles. Someone still worships there so dress respectfully.
Visitor Tips
Tip: Show up at the beginning or end of any hours to avoid long lines. Women should carry a headscarf and everyone needs to be properly dressed like this. Admission is free, however donations are appreciated.
Personal Experience
Inside of the Blue Mosque, the hustle and bustle outside dissipates for a moment. The elaborate tilework and the overall cohesion among design elements in this part of building invokes a sense spirituality neutrally calming and enlightening.
5.Basilica Cistern
Historical Background
The Basilica Cistern is a 6th-century underground wonder, that was literally hundreds of miles at one point and used to store water for the city. There is something both unusual and eerie about this atmospheric lighting, along with the sound of what almost sounds like dripping water.
Visitor Tips
The floor here is very slippery so wear some good town shoes. These two Medusa heads, which serve as column bases are not a feature you want to miss; the perfect mysterious touch of charm.

Traveling through the shadowy passageways of the Basilica Cistern was like entering a new realm. It formed interesting perspective as it reflected the columns in the water and that played a haunting beauty.
6.Galata Tower
Historical Background
Istabul Balat Tower a 1348 built tower having panoramic views of Istanbul. Throughout the centuries it has been a watchtower and prison, among other uses.
Visitor Tips
Expect the tower to be crowded, so go early or later during the day. From the top, it offers a 360-degree cityscape view.
Personal Experience
The climb up Galata Tower was difficult but the view is worth it all. It was a sight I will never forget, Istanbul laid out in all directions with its modern and ancient skyscrapers cantilvered from the surrounding hills.
7.Dolmabahce Palace
Historical Background
Built in 1856, the Dolmabahce Palace was where the main offices of Ottoman Empire were located here.setTime. It is an extraordinary building because it draws on different styles of architecture from Europe.
Visitor Tips
Though photography is prohibited inside the palace, so take it all in whilst you can. It is really informative and tells the full history of the palace in which many interesting stories!

Dolmabahce Palace is just obscenely lavish The crystal chandeliers, grand staircases and extravagant drapery provide a stark visual account of the opulence in which Ottoman sultans lived.
8.Spice Bazaar
Historical Background
The Egyptian Bazaar is also known as the Spice Bazaar and has served all kinds of special aromatic spices, herbs and tea since 17th century. For anyone who loves to cook or simply revels in the colors and smells of bustling marketplaces.
Visitor Tips
It's worth sampling before you purchase so that you can find out the quality of these spices. It is crowded so take care of your things.
Personal Experience
The Fragrance of Spice Indeed an olfactory delight, the The Spice Bazaar full sensory explosion. The fragrance of freshly ground spices mingles with die intense colors. And I come home with bags of saffron, Turkish delight and a medley of spices that have revolutionized my cooking.
9.Chora Church
Historical Background
Designed initially as a monastery in the 4th century, it is those awesome Byzantine mosaics and frescoes of Chora church are considered one of highlights. Originally a mosque, is now a museum.
Visitor Tips
The church is a little out-of-the-way, so plan your visit accordingly. Slow down and make time to admire the elaborate doorways featuring inch mosaics of biblical tales.

Chora Church is a hidden gem. The beautiful mosaics have survived remarkably over the centuries and provide a lovely peaceful escape from some of the busier tourist sites.
10.Taksim Square

The square of Taksim is continuesly lungfull. Many locals and tourists live in the area, offering something to do at all hours of the day. Before I left, my host took me to eat at one of the near-by restaurants where we enjoyed a nice meal and local flair.
11.Süleymaniye Mosque
Süleymaniye Mosque, one of the greatest mosques in Istanbul designed by architect Mimar Sinan in 16th century. Its experience is Islamic architecture meeting the beauty of Golden Horn.

The Süleymaniye Mosque would be grand and modest. Plus great architectural details and some lovely gardens for relaxing.
12.Istiklal Avenue
Historical Background
It is Istanbul's bustling pedestrian street that runs through the heart of Beyoglu like a spine, and from Galata to Taksim it vibrates with shops, cafes and history. Just a really cool place to discover the modern soul of Valencia.
Visitor Tips
Make sure you take comfortable shoes as there is plenty of walking to do. Sip on a turkish coffee at one of the many cafes and watch people go by.
Personal Experience
Istiklal Avenue, an old/new bustling mixture. There are street performers, shops and old buildings creating that vibrant environment. I remember spending hours there, often alone and poking around from shop to pungent steamy-pie restaurant in that funky old part of town.
13.Maiden's Tower

It was as if you were on a mini adventure to come here, this little island with the Maiden's Tower. The ferry and the view from the tower just sealed it.
14.Camlica Hill

The Camlica Hill, or Çamlıca Tepesi in Turkish is one of the iconic sites to visit while you are in Istanbul. Historically, its panoramic overview of the city and scial sides from above have being utilize in strategical reasons as well. In the Ottoman Empire, it was a favorite of sultans and their extended families for its peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty. Today it stands a husk of its former glory, but one which gives you insight into Istanbul's long and checkered history.
Visitor Tips
You could make a getaway to Camlica Hill if you visit early in the morning or later afternoon, outside of midday when it is most crowded. The height is separated into the Büyük Çamlıca (Great Camlica) and Küçük Çamlıca subregions, which are about 10 trees apart. Take a camera to capture the breathtaking views, and be sure not to miss the newly built Camlica Mosque- one of Turkey's biggest! There are also many cafes and tea houses amongst them, you can relax with a cup of traditional Turkish tea or coffee.

I remember when I first went to Camlica Hill, it was during a summer and my parents had taken me there as part of our holiday. The mesmerizing view of Istanbul from the highest has already touched in my mouth. In the afternoon, we wandered around verdant gardens and sat eating a picnic on blankets overlooking the Bosphorus, watching boats glide past. It felt like the total opposite of walking through the busy streets a few stories below, and was easily one of our favorite parts about being in Lisbon.

For least crowd, the best for Bosphorus cruise is early morning & afernoon. Be sure to bring a windbreaker as it can get chilly on the water. Remember to take your camera for the breath-atking views of ancient fortifications lining sandy strands.

My first experience of a Bosphorus cruise was one such foray into the past, as if I had stepped straight through my phone screen. View of the Istanbul Skyline from Across the Water — burned into my mind forever. It is a journey I recommend to anyone who comes through this rich city.
